Get Certified

Skills. Recognition. Opportunity. And that’s just the beginning.

That’s what the Canadian Mining Certification Program (CMCP) is all about: it recognizes, validates and certifies your skills and knowledge, and in turn, provides you with a nationally recognized credential that maximizes your opportunity for career growth.

If you are a worker who has dedicated many years to the mining industry, certification will validate your experience and skills. If you’re new to our industry, certification will help you to identify the skills needed to grow your career.

Currently, certification is available for Underground Miners, Surface Miners, Minerals Processing Operators, Diamond Drillers, Frontline Supervisors, Hoist Operators and Industry Trainers.

There are two methods of certification; the Workplace Assessor Process and the Candidate Driven Process.  The Workplace Assessor Process allows you to obtain certification through an on-the job assessment by a company-appointed and MiHR-trained workplace assessor (WPA). This process is available for ALL occupations. The Candidate Driven Process allows candidates to apply individually for certification and is available for the following three occupations: Frontline Supervisor, Industry Trainer and Hoist Operator.

Workplace Assessor Process

The WPA evaluates the application of skills, knowledge and level of competencies, validating that they are competent to perform the required tasks, described in the National Occupation Standards (NOS) and meeting specific requirements aligned with the Record of Assessment.

WPAs are responsible for ensuring that the assessments are conducted in a valid, fair and reliable manner. The decision on granting certification is made by the Workplace Assessor.

Candidate Driven Process

The Candidate Driven Process allows you to obtain certification through a self-evaluation and documentation of knowledge, skills, and workplace experience.

The candidate completes their own Record of Assessment, validating that they are competent to perform the required tasks and sub-tasks, described in the National Occupation Standards (NOS) and meeting specific requirements aligned with the Record of Assessment. Additionally candidates must supply 3 Referee Reference Forms, completed by an individual with a professional relationship and direct knowledge of their experience in the mining industry.

An Examiner Panel made up of subject matter experts (SME) reviews all documentation to determine if the candidate has met the requirements aligned with the Record of Assessment. The decision on granting certification is made by the Examiner Panel.

The Candidate Driven Process to certification provides an alternative to path to certification taking away barriers such as unemployment.
