MiHR's Green Jobs Program

MiHR is proud to launch its Green Jobs program aimed at helping post-secondary graduates gain relevant and meaningful work experience in the mining sector. The objective of the program is to provide 120 meaningful internship opportunities in the mining sector related to science, technology, engineering and math. These jobs should have a focus on clean technology and innovation as well as provide an environmental benefit to Canada.

Funding for this initiative is provided by the Government of Canada through Natural Resources Canada’s Green Jobs – Science and Technology Internship Program, as part of the Youth Employment Strategy. MiHR was selected as a delivery organization through a competitive process to deliver 120 jobs to post-secondary graduates over the next two years.

The Green Jobs Program is designed to help new graduates transition to long-term employment or to pursue advanced studies, through work experience and mentorship provided by approved hiring organizations.  

What is a Green Job?

Green job refers to a job within an organization with the aim to protect the environment or within an organization that is interested in processes with positive environmental outcomes. 


Positions that qualify for a wage subsidy are:

  • Full-time, jobs or paid internships that provide relevant and meaningful experience in natural resource sectors under the supervision of experienced staff who act as mentors/coaches throughout the internship;
  • Between 6 to 12 months in duration;
  • In the science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields;
  • Related to processes with positive environmental outcomes that aim to protect the environment, and;
  • Aligns with green economic sectors or industries or supports innovation and the use of green technologies and processes in the natural resources sectors

Qualifying organizations

MiHR will contribute up to 50% of an employee’s salary, to a maximum of $12,000. Eligible employers must have an established payroll system, a well-developed training plan, and a process for supervising and mentoring employees and interns. 

The organization applying must be Canadian-owned or a Canadian subsidiary, and in one of the following categories:

  • Small, medium or large companies involved in the mining or mineral exploration sector;
  • Post-secondary educational institution, or;
  • Not-for profit organization.

Eligibility criteria for employees and interns

  • Graduates from a post-secondary program;
  • Between the ages of 18-30 (inclusive) at the start of the job or internship;
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada;
  • Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial, territorial and Canadian regulations;
  • Not receiving employment insurance (EI) during their employment or internship;
  • Available to work full-time for at least 6 months, and;
  • First time recipients of funding through the Youth Employment Strategy (YES).
