Ready to Mine, Skills Development Project                                                                          

Description

The Ready to Mine, Skills Development Project will:

  • Ensure that Aboriginal peoples have the skills and confidence needed to enter the mining industry, providing a launching pad for rewarding careers in one of Canada's highest paying industries
  • Provide mining and exploration companies with a skilled, local workforce now and in future    
  • Create a nationally recognized work-ready skills development program, offering consistency in learning outcomes and worker mobility that can be delivered by a number of training experts, including colleges and other community training facilities
  • Facilitate the ability of mining industry employers to identify and verify the work readiness of candidates who have successfully completed the program
  • Enhance the relationship and cooperation between Aboriginal communities, training organization and the mining industry

Project Deliverables

  • Entry-level Skills Training Standard
  • Mining Essentials (ME) Program, including training curriculum, learner's workbook, assessment tools  and online database to track participants and success rates
  • Increased capacity for Aboriginal employment, with positive spin-off effects anticipated in community development
  • Enhanced training opportunities in mining at the local and provincial level
  • Improved worker mobility
  • Strengthened awareness and uptake of MiHR's CMCP
  • Better connectivity and collaboration between companies, communities, and trainers
  • A greater, more skilled work force for the mining industry
