OCTOBER 2010
Establishing a community of practice

MiHR is pleased to announce the launch of MiHR Innovate, an innovative HR practice recognition program. Going live in November, this online compendium will recognize, reward and showcase innovative mining HR practices while also changing perceptions and positioning mining as an excellent industry to work for.

Employers contributing to the compendium will benefit from an enhanced profile and industry status, as well as valuable insight into the industry's most innovative HR practices in areas such as diversity and inclusion, skills, training and employee development, compensation and wellness and social responsibility. Applications for MiHR Innovate will be available in November. Contact akennedy@mihr.ca for more information.
Another facet of the Innovative HR Practice Recognition Program is the Council's newly- created Canadian Mining HR Professionals and Innovators Group on LinkedIn. The group has been created to further connect mining HR professionals and to foster the development of a Canadian mining human resources community of practice. It will enable members to share knowledge, pose questions to other mining HR professionals and strengthen ideas against an industry sounding board. The group now has over 40 members and is growing daily. Click here to join today and become part of the discussion!
This group is specific to mining. Please email akennedy@mihr.ca with suggestions on how it can be managed to benefit the mining HR community.

Focus on Mining a huge success
Explore for More and Talent Egg hosted a social media campaign to bring mining careers into the spotlight
Focus on Mining is a week-long event which took place from October 4-8 and involved a dynamic and interactive approach using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to share video interviews, online articles and employer profiles to inform new grads and post-secondary students of the incredible opportunities available in Canada's mining industry.
The response from the Focus on Mining campaign was excellent as it has created a flurry of interest around mining career resources. By mid-October, MiHR had registered the most students for the Student on the Job Board out of any month since it was launched. There has also been an increased interest in MiHR's Virtual MineMentor program during and since Focus on Mining. The campaign attracted students from outside of traditional mining education programs and included students in business, general sciences and chemistry programs, to name a few.
Take a look at the incredible mix of content that was featured in the campaign:
Focus on Mining
Overall, Focus on Mining week was a huge success in dispelling myths about the mining industry, engaging youth and bringing opportunities in mining to the forefront of their career possibilities.
Happy Hallowe'en, from MiHR!
