MiHR Annual Forum - Industry Spoke and We Listened

At the recent MiHR annual forums we turned the afternoon session over to industry to discuss three issues chosen through survey:

Topic 1: Counter-Cyclical Workforce Planning Strategies

Exploring the challenges and opportunities for all stakeholders in strategic, long-term workforce planning, to mitigate the effects of industry cycles.

Topic 2: Recognizing Skilled Workers - The Canadian Mining Industry Certification Program

The benefits and costs associated with a pan-Canadian certification program for the mining industry and the development of effective strategies to support its testing and implementation.

Topic 3: Managing an Aging Workforce

Discuss the impact of an aging workforce and strategies for managing the knowledge loss when up to 40 per cent of the industry head into their retirement years.

The afternoon discussions took the format of a facilitated world café and the valuable insights we gained will now be fed into MiHR projects.  But the discussion doesn't end here - click on the topics above to see industry's thoughts and contribute to the conversation by adding your own comments using our blogging function. Pose a question so your industry can respond or share your own experience.

Mentoring 2.0 - Get Connected

Get involved in an innovative program that uses technology to match post-secondary students with exceptional mining industry workers for an enriching Virtual Mentorship experience.

With the Virtual MineMentor Program geography is no longer a barrier. Mentorship takes place primarily through the Virtual MineMentor portal found at: www.acareerinmining.ca/minementor.  Participants can use instant messaging, blogs, community message boards, email and more to communicate with their partners in the MineMentor community.

By establishing an early link to the mining industry, mentors will provide students with general guidance and workplace knowledge, creating a stronger bridge from school to work.  Sector exposure will also improve, decreasing mine-related program attrition rates over time.  HR professionals will also be familiar with research that mentoring encourages employee loyalty through a sense of belonging and a desire to achieve more within their role.

Please forward this information on to employers, potential mentors and students, we're recruiting now!
